    The pulse unit is a power semiconductor switch for pulsed current, designed to generate a single current pulse with an amplitude of up to 5 200 A at a switched voltage of 9 000 V (9 kV).

    The unit is built on specially designed pulsed thyristors with air cooling and is used in high‑power pulsed electrophysical installations.

    The operating mode is single‑pulse switching. The unit is not intended for continuous voltage or current conversion. Its task is to pass a single high‑power current pulse through the load, stored in a capacitor bank or inductive energy storage. The pulse duration ranges from 100 to 1 000 microseconds, corresponding to the operating mode of pulsed electrophysical installations.

    When switching pulses with a high rate of current rise, it is critical to ensure simultaneous turn‑on of all thyristors in the series assembly. A spread in turn‑on delay time between devices leads to overloading of the thyristor that turns on first — the entire stack voltage is momentarily concentrated across it.

    To solve this problem, the unit is equipped with a control pulse with a high rate of rise, which ensures synchronicity of turn‑on of the series‑connected thyristors.

    All power units manufactured by Proton‑Electrotex JSC can be additionally equipped on request: snubber circuits for protection against switching overvoltages, resistive dividers, current, voltage, and temperature sensors, and various types of drivers.

    Power assemblies are developed to meet individual customer requirements — simply fill out the dedicated questionnaire to specify your parameters.

  • 用途

    The pulse unit is designed for use in pulsed power systems — installations where energy is stored in a capacitor bank or inductive energy storage and then released into the load as a short, high‑power current pulse.

    Operating principle in a pulsed system. During the interval between pulses, the capacitor bank is charged from a DC source to the required level (up to 9 kV). The thyristor switch of the unit is closed — the load is disconnected from the energy source.

    Upon a command from the control system, a high‑power control pulse with a high rate of rise is applied to the thyristor stack — all thyristors turn on practically simultaneously, and the capacitor bank discharges through the load.

    The current pulse waveform is determined by the parameters of the discharge circuit (capacitor capacitance, circuit inductance, and load resistance) and can be close to a half‑sine with a duration of 100 to 1 000 microseconds.

    Typical applications:

    • Capacitor banks of pulsed installations — discharge of a pre‑charged bank through the load to produce a current pulse of specified amplitude and waveform; the unit functions as a semiconductor spark gap;
    • Energy storage and switching systems — discharge switches for capacitive energy storage with pulsed currents up to 5 200 A at voltages up to 9 kV;
    • Tokamaks and controlled thermonuclear fusion installations — pulsed power supply to magnetic system windings for plasma confinement and control; thyristor switches are used in pulsed power supply systems for poloidal field windings, providing current switching according to a specified scenario;
    • Charged particle accelerators — pulsed power supply to electromagnets and power supplies for high‑power vacuum electronic devices (klystrons, magnetrons);
    • Pulsed test benches — reproduction of impulse effects (switching overvoltages) for testing the insulation of high‑voltage equipment; impulse voltage and current generators.

    Pulsed thyristor units of this class are used where switching of current pulses with amplitudes up to 5 200 A at a high voltage of 9 kV is required, with a high rate of current rise and a service life of hundreds of thousands of switching cycles without mechanical wear.
